STEWARDSHIP PROGRAM - US SOUTHEAST - KINGSLAND PRAIRIE, AR |
||
Located in Cleveland County, Arkansas, Kingsland Prairie is the first site for The Nature Conservancy's conservation forestry initiative to restore and maintain the biodiversity of the Upper West Gulf Coastal Plain. In March 2002, TNC partnered with Hancock Timber Resource Group on a demonstration project to preserve Kingsland Prairie and the unusual plant communities associated with its unique soil type--Lafe soil. Toxic to most plants because of its high salt content, Lafe soil is found in fewer than five areas in the world. The Prairie's 820-acre core preserve is a mosaic of prairies, savannas and woodlands that sustain several rare plants, including Geocarpon minimum. |
