40-Acre Rock features some of the largest and
best developed granite flatrocks in the Piedmont Area of the eastern
United States. Located in Lancaster County, South Carolina, this
1,569-acre preserve is one of the most diverse protected natural
areas in the state. Over a dozen rare, threatened or endangered
animal and plant species make their home among its many contrasting
landscapes featuring a diabase dike, waterfall, waterslide, cave,
extensive beaver dam system, Piedmont cove forest and Piedmont flood
plain. In 1999, The Nature Conservancy, South Carolina Chapter,
purchased from the Hancock Timber Resource Group a 142-acre site
contiguous to 40-Acre Rock Heritage Preserve.
