Georgia Ocmulgee River Corridor The Ocmulgee
River flows through the Oconee National Forest in central Georgia.
The waterway is a favorite among outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy canoeing,
fishing, hiking, horseback riding and hunting along its banks. This
beautiful and ecologically fragile river corridor boasts spectacular
hardwood stands, including red oak and beech trees and abundant
wildlife such as deer, turkeys, beavers, muskrats and wood ducks.
Between 1991 and 1995, the Trust for Public Land purchased more
than 2,300 acres of prime river frontage along the river from the
Hancock Timber Resource Group on behalf of the U.S. Forest Service
and its Ocmulgee "greenway" program. The effort limits development
and protects water quality and wildlife habitat from Lake Jackson
to the Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge.
